Intro to Cybersecurity: why does it even matter?
Wassup Cyber Crew,
Welcome to our first lesson at The Kreative Fortress, and it’s on the importance of cybersecurity. Most people think that cybersecurity principles only apply to large businesses + corporations—❌ wrong.
Cybersecurity is crucial for everyone in our digital age.
In today’s interconnected world, cybersecurity isn’t just for tech experts—it’s for everyone who uses the internet.
If you own a phone or computer, shop online, check your banking info, or just use social media, understanding basic cybersecurity practices can protect you and your data online.
Why Cybersecurity Matters:
First things first, cybersecurity protects you from threats. Simple things like strong passwords, using antivirus software, and regularly updating your devices get your guard up against malware, phishing attacks, and identity theft (common types of threats).
Secondly, you gotta make sure you secure the personal data! With all the data breaches and hacks going on, it’s only right that you safeguard your digital footprint.
Last but not least, knowing a ‘lil something about cybersecurity gives you confidence that you and your family are navigating these digital streets safely.
Here are three simple tips you can practice right now to ensure your online safety:
💪🏾 Create strong passwords: Yes, I know it’s so easy to use the same login for everything, but that’s the worst thing you could do! If one acct is hacked, they are ALL hacked. Use a password manager to create unique passwords; you don’t have to bother remembering, and there is increased confidentiality.
🔐 Turn on that two-factor authentication: Again, I knooow. 😫 Getting multiple authorization alerts and codes sent to your email/phone can be annoying. BUT it lessens the chances of someone tryna tip toe into your business. You’ll be alerted right away, and the intruder will likely move on to the next.
🎣 Recognize phishing attempts: Don’t get caught slippin’. Hackers get busy and are slick when it comes to tricking you into giving up sensitive information. Be on the lookout for suspicious website links and emails. If it doesn’t look legit it probably isn’t, trust your gut!
Now, if any of the terms I mentioned sound foreign to you or make you scratch your head in confusion, don’t worry— you know I got you!
